Major Gifts
Significant gifts totaling one and a half million dollars have been made by friends and alumni, New England dairy producers, leaders in the organic dairy industry, private foundations, and major supermarkets.
Stonyfield Farm is the lead donor to the project Organic Dairy Research Farm with an initial $200,000 contribution, followed by a $250,000 matching grant enabling UNH to raise additional support. As the world’s largest organic yogurt manufacturer based Londonderry, New Hampshire, Stonyfield Farm is a clear example of what the demand for organics and natural foods can do.
Horizon Organic, located in Broomfield, Colorado, was the first certified organic dairy to distribute products nationally in the United States. Horizon pledged $350,000 towards the construction of the barn. Horizon Organic’s parent company, Dean Foods, is based in Dallas, Texas and sells more milk in the U.S. than any other company.
Aurora Organic Dairy is the nation’s largest private-label organic milk company. Headquartered in Boulder, Colorado, Aurora pledged $200,000 toward the renovations of the maternity barn and milking parlor.
“This could not come at a better time, as the organic dairy market in general and New England in particular is in need of more organic farmers. We believe organic dairy farming has the promise of saving New Hampshire and New England family farmers,”
~Gary Hirshberg, President and CE-Yo of Stonyfield Farm
